Saferoom began as an online "club" located at Yahoo!. It began in September of 1998. Quickly we realized that the public access of Yahoo! did not allow us the privacy or security we wanted, so we created our own site with private forums. From there Saferoom evolved into The Saferoom Project, a fully functioning webfront and a non-profit organization based in North Carolina, providing peer-to-peer support and resources for survivors, their partners, families and friends. The Yahoo! group is still going strong, but The Project has grown to host thoudands of members in its ten years online. We currently host a real-time chat, private forums and maintain the public forum at Yahoo! We are proud to be the largest and longest running forum for survivors of sexual assault on Yahoo!. We also gather for the National SRP Conference annually.
The Project is for peer support. It does not offer therapy or crisis intervention; rather, its members offer friendship, compassion and a place to be understood without being judged.
