The Saferoom Project
The Saferoom Project Organizational Mission and Goals
Mission Statement
- To provide support to and foster healing in people of all ages, races,
cultures, genders, marital status, religious beliefs, sexual orientations,
both in online and offline communites.
To provide a place for sexual
abuse survivors to see that
they are not alone and to instill a positive self worth and desire for wellness.
To provide a support arena for any whose lives have been touched by sexual abuse--from survivors, to supporters of survivors.
To inspire advocacy of issues, needs, interests, and goals
important to survivors and their
supporters in all affiliated with The Saferoom Project.
Goals
- To create a community of people who are ready and
willing to support each other both online and offline.
- To have
these rooms moderated by people who are wholly dedicated
to stamping out rape and sexual abuse as well as the
ramifications it has on ones life.
We plan to meet this goal by creating a network of chat rooms, bulletin
boards, and discussion lists, across the World Wide Web, and by publishing a
monthly eNewsletter giving details on our support forums, and the greater support
community, both online and offline. We will develop programs
offline to promote the same mission that we have for our online community.
(We will offer diverse
upbeat and effective community self-esteem building
services, as well as a support network for the communities, themselves.)
Principles
- We will do our best to be:
- Supportive. We are a community built up by supportive people
in which members are encouraged to learn to deal with ALL
feelings "good and bad". We want them to learn what
there triggers are and how to diminish the effect those
triggers have on there daily lives. Our hope is that
members can, with the support of other members, learn
that they are good, strong capable people. We want them to
know they can come to us and not be judged for anything
they have felt or have done. We want to build up and in
most cases even create self esteem in people who have never
had any.
- Honest. We are committed to always being honest
with people. We want this to be a community in which people
learn to speak up for themselves, and share what it is they
need, how we can help them and to teach them they do not
have to be alone in this journey. We want people to know
they have a voice in saying what works and what does not
work for themselves and to try and make them feel as safe
as one can feel without any confusion or concern.
- Fair. We will do our best to be fair and respectful to
people involved at all levels of our organization including
but not limited to volunteers, members, staff, board,
board, donors, etc. We will always be open to listen to any
complaints or suggestions for any one within our
organization.
- Productive. We will use our own time and the time of
the people who work with us or who we help, as efficiently
and effectively as possible.
- Safe. We will do our best to ensure the emotional and
physical safety of all members of our organization. We will
never intentionally place any member, volunteer or any
person associated with our organization in any position
where we do not feel safety to be at the utmost priority.
